Seasonal Tips - Winter

Bird Care
  • Make sure that you have a bird bath heater in your bird bath to keep the water from freezing
  • Snow can clog a feeder just as easily as rain can, so make sure you keep your feeders cleaned off
  • You can switch to a bird seed with corn in the winter because corn actually puts heat into a birds' body
Tree & Shrub Care
  • Make sure to keep snow off of your evergreens, the weight of the snow on your evergreens can damage the plant
  • Try not to get ice melt around your trees and shrubs, the salt can be absorbed by the root system and harm the plant
Perennial Care
  • Mulch over perennials that die back completely
  • If you have not cut back your grasses yet you should wait until the end of March
  • There are some perennials that would do better if you cut them down in the Spring instead of the Fall. A few examples are:
Asters
Baloon Flower
Coral Bells
Dianthus
Hostas
Lavender
Oriental Poppy
Russian Sage
Astilbe
Butterfly Weed
Campunula
Foxglove
Ladys Mantle
Lupines
Pincushions
Sedum
Rubeckia
Cardinal Flower
Delphinium
Gayfeather
Lambs Ear
Mums
Echinacea
Tickseed Coreopsis

Lawn Care
  • Remove leaves and sticks from your lawn. These things can actually smother the grass, create disease conditions, or invite pests into you lawn.
  • If you have not put a winter fertilizer down on your grass you should use Fertilome Winterizer by the end of November
