Seasonal Tips - Fall
Bird Care
If you have not seen a hummingbird in September for at least two weeks then you need to take your feeder down
Fall is the best time to start feeding the birds again because they are scouting out places to feed this winter. If you wait to put you feeders up until it snows you might miss out on your birds.
If you have a birdbath make sure to keep fresh water in it and you may want to consider finding a heater for it before winter gets here.
Tree & Shrub Care
Fall is an excellent time to plant trees or shrubs, you can plant them up until the ground freezes
Remember to use Fertilome Root Stimulator when you plant your new trees and shrubs to help them not to go into shock when planted
Make sure that your trees and shrubs have about 2-3” of mulch around them to help hold in the moisture and keep the weeds down
Continue to water newly planted trees and shrubs until the ground freezes
Perennial Care
Fall is an excellent time to divide, transplant, or plant peonies, daylilies, iris, or phlox
Plant Spring flowering bulbs in September when the temperature cools down
Cut back any dead perennials
Make sure that you plant your mums 6 weeks before frost to ensure that they get rooted in for winter
Lawn Care
September is probably the best month all year to plant grass seed. This includes either overseeding or seeding a new lawn.
Fall is also an excellent time to aerate and/or de-thatch your lawn, which should be done before reseeding.
If you do decide to aerate or de-thatch you should either wait until after a good soaking rain or water one to two days before you want to begin.
You can fertilize with Fertilome New Lawn Starter at the same time you reseed your lawn.
Remember to put down Fertilome Winterizer in late October or November for green grass next year.
