Harry's Gardening Tips
If this summer is anything like last summer you are going to need to water your plants and your lawn. As a general rule, most plants need about an inch of water per week to stay healthy. The best way to make sure that your plants are getting enough water is to use a rain gauge. If the gauge indicates less than an inch of water total for a week, then you will need to water your plants. The best time to water is either in the morning or the evening, try not to water in the heat of the day.
The ideal way to water would be an irrigation system. However, most of us do not have that luxury, so the easiest way to water your lawn would be with an oscillating sprinkler. You may also choose to use the oscillating sprinkler in your garden and your flower beds. However, if you have the time I would suggest using a watering wand to hand water each plant. When you water at the base of the plant it reduces the chances of a foliar disease and you are sure to get the same amount of water to each plant.
If you have container plants, such as hanging baskets or planters, they will require more water than the rest of your landscaping. If they are in full sun, they may have to be watered everyday. You can check the pots by sticking one finger in the dirt around the plant to see if it moist. If it is moist then you should not water the pot that day.
